Ive hit a wall

Ive become a bit concerned to be honest. Usually I have a go at climbing every weekend on these few trees around my dads smallholding thing. Ever since I started doing it ive been making good progress and ive got right to the top of one of the oak's and started limb walking too(considering I started off s**ting myself the first go because I had issues trusting the equipment I think Im doing well). But the weekend before the Christmas weekend I had a go on the beech and my head went weird and I couldn't perform anywhere near as good as I had been previously. I thought oh well ill have another go after Christmas. Had a go today and it was just as terrible. Is this normal for a beginner? How can I resolve it other than just plodding along? It would be embarrassing if it happened in front of the lads at work

Don`t push yourself too hard, learn to trust your equiptment. I think even experienced climbers look down once in a while and think "mm that`s a long way", it`s called being rational, it keeps you safe.

Its probably because you are just climbing the tree rather than working in it. Your mind is occupied a lot more when actually cutting in the tree. I find myself thinking damn its a long way down sometimes, but as soon as the saw is going I forget about it.

Try setting yourself a task if just climbing like get to a certain tip of a branch then on to another task it may help you to stop worrying.

I think there's prob more chance of it happening if you're climbing o9n your own rather than with others about....

 

I don't climb much at all now but a lot of it comes down to thinking positive. You need to counter any negative thoughts quickly as although they do help to keep you safe too much of them can have the opposite effect.

A fear of hieghts is a perfectly normal instinct, your brain is telling you its not comfortable with this situation.

 

You need to get over this and re program your brain, but i would strogly urge you to do this with another rather than on your own, it will help in many ways.

Sounds like you need to be with someone experienced still to tell you its ok to go higher, advise you when you're feeling stuck, re-assure you ect
