Relighting stoves

Running the risk of asking a stupid question here but as I'm new to wood stoves I'm gonna go for it.

 

When I return to my stove in the morning and find a nice pile of hot embers , what's the best way to get it going again ?

 

Is it as simple as more paper , kindling and logs or is there a trick I'm missing.

 

Some one I used to know reckoned he just opens the vents and his would burst into flames of it's own accord ,so I'm either doing some thing wrong or he was mr Billy bullpoo..

All i do with our jotull is criss cross a bit of kindling open air vent and away she goes your half way there if you can get it to stop in all night:001_smile:

No right or wrong way really, I have a small set of bellows, that gets a stick or bark or moss or something going a treat, failing that just blow on it!

Two sheets of newspaper, rolled together and tied in a knot and you shouldn't have any issue.

surely this can only happen if your chimney is skanky already, the paper or leaf or ember or whatever sticks to the side because it is full of creosote up there. if your burning good wood and sweep it every so often then surely it'll be fine to send a bit of paper up it?

Bellows is the answer.... I got some antiquey ones off ebay and I do not know why I didn't get any sooner...

It is possible to relight the stove by opening up the dampers in the morning but you will need to put a big old log on the stove just before going to bed and not laying in too late in the morning:lol:

 

I usually do this at Christmas when we spend much of the day in the room with the burner in it.

Morso recommend newspaper, be unusual or a whole piece to go around the top baffle intact, thats about a 160 degree bend in most stoves.

 

relight, yes kinding if you have decent embers, failing that rolled up newspaper with kindling on top.
