Rope Wrench feedback

Recommended Posts

Thanks D Mc.

After 8 loyal years on a Lockjack I'm finding minor confidence issues using an HC under my RW. I suppose the confidence will improve, it's only a minor wobble in my mind, and then I won't look back.

The thing is, I'm very well aware that an LJ will always catch you every single time, guaranteed. A HC needs to be checked and adjusted continually to ensure its set just right. That's my issue.

I'm not slagging off the HC / VT knot, it's a superb system, but I do miss my LJ.

I don't miss climbing DdRT though so if the Uni/RW combo is as sublime in performance as it is in aesthetics, then I may need to open the wallet, again.

Keep us posted with anything you discover.

Thanks.

Have you given much time to a LJ/WR combo? Its what I use every day now. Once you get it set right, its not dissimilar to using a LJ on DdRT.

The slack self tends nicely, and you can adjust it upwards with one hand, just pull your rope upwards from between the wrench and LJ, creating a bight, and as you release, the rope will fall through the LJ, holding you perfectly where you've set it. No bending to one side, and no need for a little descent to engage the wrench.

I've also found its easy to pull the rope from the top of the LJ, as i would ona limb walk, the wrench stays engaged the whole time, so once you let go, the system is ready to rumble!

Give it a try, took me a month or so to get used to it, but I can't see myself changing to a VT anytime soon

Not that I am a fan of srt work positioning (i,m just an old dinosaur stuck in my ways:001_rolleyes:) although I will use it when I feel it suits the job. But I really think the RW and uni would make a great partnership for those that like srt for work positioning (if it works like I think it does in my mind) especially if it increases the life span as I know climbers who would burn through a uni in months.

Close call today.

Sweet chestnut to dismantle and one beside it to deadwood and remove snapped limbs, all possible from the same anchor on the removal tree.

Beautiful still spring day down here in Kent, perfect setup for the wrench.

Bagged in at 45 feet and sent up a running bowline. Pantin engaged, lanyard nice and tight over the shoulder and off I went. The ascent was pretty much in free space between the two trees.

An old git like me is still revelling in the rate of ascent possible, so I was buzzing.

Got to about 35 feet and decided to take a breather and sit back on the hitch.

The problem was that I had forgotten to clip my lower crab onto the ring on my bridge. I hadn't clipped it to anything at all.

PANIC! I was attached to my line by my grip and Pantin alone.

Got the shakes a bit, but managed to clip in one-handed. Big sigh of relief.

Still can't believe I did it, what a complete prick.

The rest of the day went really well.

Check once, check twice.

Stay safe fellas.
