You can but not ideal as they are designed to do a slightly diff job

I have in the past lost e-clip and used a small piece of wire of the right size. Wire round slot back on itself and twist like the old potato bag ties (maybe should be in the over 50's thread). Not ideal but keeps the job going.

West you may also find it difficult to get a circlip of the right size and thickness as the e-clip, i  think the E's are normally thicker for  a given size

Going a bit redneck now - that "repair" looks decidedly iffy and am guessing if it went, could cause a fair bit of damage to the side cover but what the heck....keeps me in a living:D
