Not overkill at all. A brogio head failure (I know - they're banned) would destroy that box. It'll slow the projectile but doubt it would stop it coming out...

Haha, I would not even start a machine with a brogio head, indoors or out, box or no box!

 

That plastic box is pretty strong though, I reckon it would keep most things in, after all, we are only being extra cautious. It has all been checked before starting anyway.

Noticed a few breaks in the kill switch wire on a saw would they be enough to stop the ignition from working ?

Tried turning her over on a drill so I could really watch and there was no spark at all ,not even a weak intermittent one.

Small breaks in HT wires don't tend to stop a spark as the HT on most saws will jump 5-10mm but it will stop the spark if it is jumping to earth or cause misfires.

 

Worth checking continuity with a multimeter but this isn't looking good so far:thumbdown:

So, after a lifetime of repairing spark plug threads with Helicoil I had my first fail. I suppose that's not too bad, I guess we are all entitled to a fail every now and then.

 

But it started me thinking, and thoughts lead to googling. and googling leads to spending.

 

I now reckon that maybe my well respected friend may be right and that solid inserts may just have the edge over helicoils, so all I need now are some damaged threads, or this will be another of those purchases that I lose under a layer of workshop grime.

I finally bought a clutch cover, I'm still missing a chain tensioner and I suspect bar plates plus a chain and bar nuts and I'll be able to try it out.

Macpherson said it was after 1980, anyone know which models had points and when solid state ignition?

 

It seems quite fat for a snedding saw compared with a 254 of the same era.

 

Amfell got it spot on :thumbup:

There where six models that shared the same chassis and parts but they all had different electronics the 114 was the weakest in the spark department

I've got some parts here if you need any for that saw

 

The sachs dolmar 115 was the best saw too compete against the 254 of that era a lot slimmer and agile :thumbup:
