Thanks for the replies so far.

Without the plugs in to engine turns over on the switch as if there is no problem. Put the plugs in an it is if the battery low. I have tried various batteries all fully charged but have the same problem. I think it is a starter motor problem. Do they have brushes?

Hi, yes they have brushes but I have always found it better to fit a new B&S starter as they don't last if you mess with them.

 

You can strip them right down, but it's a right pain to get the brushes back in.

 

Might be one of the magnets has come un stuck and is rubbing on the rota.

Not on my bench but I must get down to getting this running, the grass is getting pretty long here.

An old MTD ride on mower that despite having a brand new fully charged battery will not turn over. I have removed the plugs and it turns ok then.

I thought it would be an earthing problem but have run a separate lead from the negative on the battery to the starter housing but no success.

Some good answers here re the starter etc, but there is another possibility.

 

These old twin cylinders had the pots at 180 degrees rather than the more modern V twin.

 

They have a habit of being difficult to get past TDC on the firing stroke for several reasons. As mentioned, this can be due to a weak starter or a week battery, but could also be due to high compression from carbon build up in the upper cylinder.

 

It could also be quite simply due to the valve clearances being too loose. This could result in incomplete scavenging as the valves are not open for sufficient time to expel the gases on the exhaust stroke.

It'll be scored to hell, you'll definitely need a new piston, hopefully the cylinder is rescueable

We had a lot of overheating/seizing problems with these yet my 165r kept going since 1974.

 

Anyway if the cylinder is stamped MAHLER 42ZD9 I have a pot and piston, unused but many years old ( or does this contravene rules as an advert?)

 

Thanks for the offer openspaceman. Those codes can't be seen on the affected parts though and tbh we are thinking of getting a new machine. The 240r was about 15 yrs old and battered to hell. Its going to see alot of work over the next few yrs so probably time for a new one. Do you guys rate the new husqvarna brushcutters?

Still going through the kit I've 'inherited' from my predecessor on the estate, I've got a Flymo GT500 hover mower with a Suzuki M120X engine in it. Despite the engine being a 2-stroke, the fuel cap says Unleaded and it is my guess somebody has run it on such as the engine felt as near siezed as you can get without being solid. I've put some oil in it through the plug hole and it will now turn with the use of a socket but I don't see it running without some serious work. It is difficult to ascertain the level of damage through the exhaust port. I know they are a good machine on slopes, and the particular site this machine is from has more than a few, so will I be able to source the parts to fix it? I'd like to get it done as I reckon it will be very useful. :001_smile:

Ok. The Flymo has a clutch on it. When you pull the cord or turn the engine does the blade turn. This can give the impression that the engine is seizing up. Is there a handle on the top. It's like the stop start handle on the domestic mowers that acts as a clutch.

Rich means a opc ( operator presence control ) or flywheel brake this will give the impression of a semi seized engine as rich explained

 

That's the one. :blushing::lol:

 

Had a few in before with the same problem. It was broken. Give a very good impression of being seized. You need to find it and see if its working properly.

 

By the way these engines don't semi seize. They either stick fast or fall to bits inside.

Just checked it and the blade turns when I pull on the starter cord. Not sure what you mean by the handle on the top? :confused1:
