Go careful on the 044 - did a 440 recently - Stihl didn't leave much on the inlet and exhaust port - the piston windows can be opened up and there is much to do in the transfers!

Been working on a 372XP - bit of porting. First thing to notice is the Feck off bad boy muffler and the second - the high rise airfilter - nice:thumbup:

 

I half expected to see this already ported once apart but it wasn't. Opened up the inlet and exhaust, modified the transfers considerably, dropped the base gasket then did all the necessary pressure and vac tests - all fine after cleaning the leaky decomp! Very worth doing these no need tuning a leaky saw!

 

All looks good, fired right up and will now tach on a 24" as per the usual bar of choice by the customer.

This month started off good with high winds and call outs, Then my MS271 Seized up no idea how till i took it to a stihl rep and told diesel had gone in it. Panicked as the same fuel had gone it 200t and blower all in for a service the next day. came back ok apart from £600 repair bill for 200T Piston shot it. So seeing i needed a new saw what do i go for MS260,MS441. No FR Jones to the rescue MS660. So after a bad start to the month ended up with a MS660 20inch and 36inch Bar...

Fixed a local guys 066 and came back a few days later saying it was running crap and smoking badly:blushing: Fired it up and man it smoked, fluid flowing out of the exhaust smelt like diesel.

 

Checked it all out and in the end changed the fuel and all was good:thumbup:

 

Reckon the fuel he had got had a shot of diesel in it and the saw was burning off the petrol and leaving the diesel unburnt - Garages:001_rolleyes:

 

Not good news in your case though.

Not on my bench yet... and unsure what to do with it yet but i have a hs80 hedge trimmer thats a pita to start, also on off switch doesnt work anymore, play in bushes? For rear handle.

 

Cant remember if it was ok when i got it or not, which was a while age, but seems like its never been right since i lent it someone

 

Anyhow can take 10-12 pulls wih choke on to fire...

 

Spend 100 on getting it fixed... or put towards a new one...

On my bench, partner k650 that starts, revs up, but as soon as you drop the revs once warm, dies and won't restart!

Measure the compression - could be teetering on the edge of oblivion:lol:

 

Also check the fuel tank vent - they can give similar issues if a vacuum is formed.

 

If neither of these, give the carb a good going over.

The pressure test will prove the needle valve is fine - it may still pass with the metering arm or gaskets being incorrect - these are the typical faults of overfuelling - I am taking the H&L screws are set correctly?

 

cheers Spud - metering diaphragm was knackd - no flex in it, like a piece of cardboard- replaced it and runs like a new saw. So, it was holding pressure when flexed one way but too stiff to flex back after opening the needle and so constant flloding.

Before I had the pressure tester I used to change all dias and gaskets as a matter of course - but that's expensive if they're fine - this is a helpful reminder to double check their condition.

Am wondering is there any way to recondition a metering diaphragm that's gone 'card-boardy'?

 

 

Anybody - it's a Makita DCS34 - when I google it's telling me this is a commercial grade saw? is that right? Certainly cuts with oomph.
