Four strokes don't work flat out as well as two strokes, too much stress for them to handle. A bit of oil starvation thrown in and they are a recipe for disaster, alright for lawnmowers and Rotavators that work mainly on the level but waving round and upside down is a recipe for disaster.

I am having problems with my old Thwaites digger dumper. I love this machine and want to get it working again. I have the dumper skip and also the stand for the digger attachment.

 

The dipper arm will not pull in to load the bucket, it has lost all power. It works ok when there is no resistance. The other rams still seem to have plenty of power. I have replaced the oil filters.

I thought about switching the hydraulic pipes on the spool valve but this does not look like an easy job.

Any suggestions?

I have got one stupidly busy day tomoz. Ms200t, cut off saws coming out my ears, ms170, two electric saws dropped in for sharpen and check over, a mantis rotovator that hasn't been used in a year, wants it going and a gearbox to fit on a strimmer, thanks gardenkit for that. Again super fast delivery.

 

Plenty to do.

 

The cut off saws are the ones I'm not looking forward to. So might just crack on with them first.

 

Tries the makita one earlier,, what a stupid pig of a design that is. Anyway getting fuel and a very good spark but not firing. So comp test, but I can feel already its not good.

I recently warned a local guy off a four mix long reach, all is fine if they are running perfectly but IMO, the two stroke is so simple, no moving parts in the port timing so are generally very reliable and very simple to work on.

Been using two new KM130R today and what a difference 12 months make. No snap back from the valves/early firing. Almost like an Ergostart it was so smooth.

 

On an unrelated issue, we have a HL101 long reach which is a right arse to start. Its been in for a new carb but still floods. Once it fires it coughs and splutters into life. The only thing i can think which is the problem is the spark arrester is clogged with soot as the smoke is black but bogs down until it it warm. Would it be worth removing the arrester (if it has one)?

If a carb freely lets out fuel then it is the needle valve that is either being held open or simply leaking allowing fuel to flow in to the metering part of the carb and flood in to the carb throat through the low speed injectors.

 

If you mean the engine becomes flooded because it won't fire and pulling over the engine on full choke fills the thing with fuel then that is different.

 

Assuming the latter if it has had a new carb on it - if it won't fire on say five pulls on full choke, have you tried holding the throttle fully open with the choke off and pulling the engine over - your problem may be that the fast idle mechanism that holds the throttle open isn't holding the throttle valve open as it should.

 

A blocked exhaust/spark arrestor will cause problems and worth pulling the exhaust off for a closer look.

 

It could be that the carb needs a better tune or that the engine is lacking compression enough to cause issues.

 

The other thing I have found with these four mix engines is that the valve clearence needs to be set 100% otherwise it causes all sorts of issues and this is also worth a look at.

 

I do specialise on two strokes and try to avoid the four mix engines - funny as I spent my youth on four stroke bikes and never had a two stroker:lol:

 

Someone else may have greater experience on your long reach.

 

Oh - it may have an auto decompressor mechanism that has jammed on... or off!
