Localism bill ??

I spotted a story today about local authorities being allowed to set up commercial ventures , surely if your local council started competing against you at private tree work ( or any private work) this shouldn't be allowed due to them having the tax payers money as financial back up ?? To add to this I heard the a council near Blackpool does do private tree work ?

Yes this is true , cornwall council has set up its own company , all equiment has been funded by the tax payer and it has been made clear to me that Cornwall council intends to not only use its compant for all council works without it going out to tender but they will be competing for works outside of the council . Makes me think that i should ask David Chameron for a new mog and chipper at the tax payers expense !!!!

When I use to work for a' LA' we never did any private work & think this should be the rule along with the charity type based ' housing groups that have there own in house work but want a slice of the private jobs :(

I have just discovered today that one of our LA's are starting to do private work.

It does seem strange that they can use tax payer funded equipment to compete against private company's.

The argument used for it is that the money charged goes back into council coffers, so its OK.

But it still does not seem like a level playing field to me.

Interesting, let me see if I got this right. Your local council which is tax payer funded is actively competing with the private sector for work, while at the same time being funded by the same tax payers to perform all other usual type work council's are required to do in the first place?. Seems to me that the public sector is trying to close the gap on the private sector?. Sounds like a conflict of interest to me. I wonder how long this scam will continue before the tax payers call for referendum and stop this in it's tracks. My opinion from the other side of the pond.

i wonder how competative they will be, ?? as they seem to go out in teams of 3, should be intresting:001_smile:

Put it this way - How competetive would you be if you had a budget from the council for doing their work that would more than cover the running costs each year but leave you plenty of time to carry out other works and you also knew that because you were connected to the L/A you would not be stopped by highways or the local HSE officer if you were not complying with the rules ?? and to to it off you knew that no one could even so much as quote against you for any council work !!!
