Forget the electric and use a file.

 

+1

 

- better sharpness

- sharpen anywhere (no need for power outlet nearby)

- faster (except when chain is totally ruined)

- handles any chain size

- longer chain life (only remove the material required)

- Easy

- Cheap

echo the above comment. for the occaisional user who may use a chain or two a year, a file is much easier.

 

Portek do a chain sharpener thats mainly plastic and you do get what you pay for at £40, however ive not used one so dont know if they do a good job or not.

 

i use the equivalent model to the oregon pro bench mounted one and it gives good results, its good for sorting out mullered chains and is about as quick as a hand file when just giving chains a tickle. it keeps angles and the amount taken consistent so the chain will cut straight, which is handy!
