Great post Stephen.nowt better than grafting in woods and having a good time doing it.If we make a bit of money from it then all the better.I've always prefered the log end of the business.

Funny how excited some of the customers get regarding an order of logs,I've had few who've said the same thing, get excited all day waiting for the logs.

My lad who works for me told me yesterday that he and his mate, who used to split logs for me on satarday mornings, were discussing how their preference for log shapes difered. Jonny liked brick shapes, the other like dairy lee traingle shapes:lol:

Now this is 2, 21 year old lads :laugh1:

Surely that's a whole new thread

I'm a brick fan myself :thumbup1:

To answer the OP's original question, its all down to how much of your income comes from logs.

If is 60% or more of your total income, its got to be your main business, less than that and its more of a side line.

There will be some who make more from a side line log business than others for whom its there main source of income.

But as a very wealthy man told me many years ago "Being well off is more about whats going out than whats coming in".

i have 3 land line no's that are usually diverted to 3 different mobiles... or to 1 when not that busy... 1 for skips and 2 for logs and tree work.. i have them all on a long ring before answer phone kicks in so can usually finish conversation on one phone then answer other.. if its a tree job i'm on phone too have been known to cut them off to answer another phone or take a call thats waiting on same phone.. then ring back apologisin for being in a "bad area"..

I have found that the surest way to get orders coming in is to just go in the shower, the b****y phone always rings as soon as I step into the shower

whats wrong with making the same profit every year?

How about 5% inflation making that same profit less valuable for the coming year! To match next years profit with last years profit, after all your expenses have increased, you're going to have to grow.

Or you could just put your prices up to cover rise in expenses.
