They are difficult, but by no means impossible Dean. The idea that you are not professional by kitting yourself out with a chipper of legal tow weight for a 3.5ton vehicle it absurd (legal as in it does not reduce the carrying capacity of the vehicle). Surley disregarding legislation, so you can reverse smoothly up a driveway is less professional?

Pete,

thats slightly incorrect. There are two gross weights for a vehicle.

Gross vehicle weight and Gross train weight. So for example

my landy is 3500kg GVW and 700kg GTW, the Landy is still only 3500kg GVW regardles of wether its towing or not. therefore what ever its towiing won't reduce its load carrying ability.

What people do need to be carefull of is they don't exceed the gross train weight.

Sorry if the above seemed picky - I'm a towing anorak!:scared1:

I stand corrected - happily :001_cool:

p.s. I hope that the 700kg GTW is a typo:scared1:

Who mentioned legislation :confused1:

All I was suggesting is the chippers need to be a few inches wider to make life so much easier.

I'd like to see a groundy jump out and shove a chipper up my drive :001_tongue:

My bandit is a perfect width for reversing, I can slot it anywhere first attempt no juggling about.

Put a timberwolf on the back and you'd think I'd never reversed a trailer before in my life and it really doesn't look proffesional when your having several attempts to aim the timberwolf up a steep drive past the clients brand spanking car and the smell of burning clutches drifts up the drive.

If I come along, swing out in the road and reverse up the drive in one fluid motion, the customer will be a lot less anxious about you carrying out the job than if I turned up snaking up the drive and eventually getting it up after a few close calls past his valuable garden ornaments.

Putting more width on a chipper does not add to it's weight

I agree with Dean!

When I had a 5 foot wide Kwik Chip in for some repairs we had a jensen 530 on hire for a couple of weeks.

I backed it in and up our driveway to prove a point to the lads, but we soon got sick of trying to 'use the force' to back uphill and round a bend with something you couldn't see behind a chip box on a tranny.

The novelty of taking it off and pushing it uphill in the dark at the end of a busy day soon wore off as well.

There's no need for small light towable chippers to be narrow, and they would probably be more stable on the road too?
