cheers for the replies....was a fun climb...campers could have been moved, but there on 'holiday' so was too much effort. i did have a word with the boss when we fell the stem and it shattered into many pieces! But at least it made it was to log up and move around!!

the campsite were very over cautious so wanted it down....the option of a habitat stump was talked about..but they declined my offer.

yes this is true but still a reduced tree with a decent crown spread would still require more than the 5-7% sound wall thicknes that this tree had .

The thing was, it was climbed without knowing the extent of the decay.

 

 

Out of interest, does anyone know of a case where a tree failed at the base whilst being climbed? Not root plate, I know that's happened.

yeah i guess it could have been retained but to what extent ? i personally could not see it looking all to plesent especially on the grounds of what appears to be a lovely camp site .
