Stump grinding prep

if you use a small walk behind grinder and dig around the stump before you start grinding i find the machine falls in and makes it alot harder to move left to right

I usually have a dig around the stump... just to check on the lazy NTL and BT workers round this way haven't left a surprise for you.

i have a dig around with a crowbar,pulled up allsorts,bbq plates,tools and of course rocks.

Always have a look around. We cleared around this Ash stump and still found all of this...

I rarely dig around a stump, unless there is obvious cause for concern.

 

I removed a conifer yesterday that had been planted in a raised bed on top of a manhole cover. Fortunately I didn't bother with a stump grinder, just ripped the whole tree out with the crane, rootball, bed and all. Anyone trying to grind that would have had a nasty surprise!

should have a bit of a dig, there's more than rocks down there you know. (not my mishap,) just visited someone elses site when this happened.

 

:thumbdown: that picture brings back bad memories. I was grinding some conifers out with someone and had just taken over from a mate when all of a sudden heard this crash and the biggest flash of light ever. Backed away, swicthed off and changed pants looked down in hole to find an electric cable about 6 inches below the surrface no cover no warning nothing on house plans customer new nothing as we asked before.

 

Electricity board got called out to investigate 6 blokes and 6 hours later came to conclusion that it was the customers electric and cut a few inches on cable out as it was apparantley not needed. Then asked for £2000

 

The poor customer was terrified as he had been digging around in the garden for a while

 

digging wouldnt of done anything to stop it and for the record i dont dig:001_smile:

Does anyone use a CAT scanner to avoid cables when stump grinding?
