Good question Tom, my understanding of this is that Ecto-mycorrhizal species (the ones that produce fruitbodies) can fruit at the outer extremity of the trees rhizosphere where the soil is full of microbial activity (like in the lime and birch shots above) but they also fruit at the base of tree trunks (particularly smooth barked species) where there is water run off and assimilates.

Went on a fascinating workshop where I saw Andy Taylor present. He's the resident Fungal Ecologist at the James Hutton institute in Aberdeen. He's been studying the relationship between myco's and trees in the highlands for years and knows his subject intimately. But I understand that there's still huge work to do in not only understanding myco's and their tree relationship but possibly more importantly what their relationship is to the other soil flora and biology.

 

Nev Fay (and others) are embarking on a journey to bring us to a better understanding of soil (in its direct relationship to tree health) but it's going to be a long road.
