Sad day-

Recommended Posts

I dropped my external hard drive a while back, and had been meaning to back it up for a long while, i have 70,000 images on it, many of which are important scientific records. i have just spent 48 hours trying to salvage as much as I can, still a long way to go, but it appears many files have corrupted and are no longer viable:puke:

I do not know as yet the full extent of the damage, but i was supposed to be putting a file together to mail some great people regarding my theories on Fistulina hepatica after a conversation this week.

just when these images become the asset they was always meant to be, i may have lost more than I can bare.

This is the second time ive lost images, but this is a BIG loss.

The digital age is a great thing, and a curse, learn from my mistake and back up boys and girls, cos this is going to sting for me for all my days.

one of my old music tech teachers used to say 'if the file dosnt belong in 3 places, it doesnt exist'

I've done that before...

It's so easy to get complacent and not back up and heart breaking when this happens.... there'll be more (and better) pics out there and now you'll be even more keen to get 'em!

many moons ago when i was responsible for data archiving at a graphics company we did the following:

1 paper copy.....print em out!

2 digital copy placed on a dvd

3 digital copy held on a back up drive

4 digital copy retained for instant access on the server.

we generated approx 800,000 unique images per year so it was quite a task!

i know the horse has already bolted but initiate a back up system and stick to it.

Also always check you can read the back ups and keep them at separate locations if possible.

with regards to your now defunct hard disk, do not despair. as other have said, there are professional recovery firms who can get it all back for you , allbeit at a price.
