Yes, firstly though, for me there are two options for treeclimbing,

 

1 - climbing with spikes for tree removal

 

2 - climbing without spikes for pruning jobs etc

 

 

I wear spikes on every removal I climb. They give you more options to stand with good posture and allow for optimum work positoning to make cuts.

 

In the UK more often than not its raining at work, so they add extra security and decrease the risk of slipping when using the saw. I also dont have a problem with spikes when I want to stand on a limb or branch walk.

 

If you find spikes uncomfortable it could mean you haven't used them enough. If you learn to use spikes as if they are part of your body and combine this with your skills of climbing without spikes - it should make your climbing easier and more comfortable when removing a tree.

haha that is awsome lol. Who said anything about leaving pegs? i just climb the tree and take down as normal but without spikes. And when get to vertical timber, put em on and chog down as normal. not ever tree, just the ones that suit. Pegs are dodgy as and can be very dangerous:thumbdown:

 

@adam i reckon if we can lower/fell and take trees down over people, houses and car's etc etc. i reckon we can make the judgement on what shoes we wear. there is still some common sense out there mate:001_tt2:

MOG - comon bro- spikes are an essential item of climbing kit. Definitely safer and quicker for tree removals - particularly if rigging or dismantling over obstacles. You can put your feet in any position in the tree for excellent body positioning. I see too many climbers struggle because they dont like spikes, they just take time to get used to - like soft porn...Invest in the carbon fibres and its all good.

Now- I recall a recent comment you made about Best Practice on a forum and Steel toe boots comes into that category...Ha hA
