We had both chimneys swept today for £100 so receipt/cert issued. I've also thought about doing it myself so I asked an ins co (not ours). They told me that if a chimney fire was proved to have been caused by excessive soot, the ins would be void unless proof could be shown that all steps were taken ie, swept annually by a qualified sweep. I've watched him several times & I'm pretty sure I could do it, its just that damned certificate...

About to light ours.

Weather has well and truly turned now. Cold wet and windy with some thunder and lightning for good measure. Looking forward to drying out in front of the fire later.

Set up a small company as a chimney sweep, and contract yourself to sweep your own chimney?! Probably not worth it, and not so simple either. What counts as a "qualified" sweep?

Dunno, prob nationally recognised like arborists?

NACS appears to be the regulatory body. Turns out my sweep isn't listed there!

Nor at the Guild Of Master Chimney Sweeps! Though they also state that "Sweeps within the UK are still not legally obliged to pursue any training or gain any qualifications in order to trade. However, for a chimney sweep to become a member of the Guild they must meet and adhere to strict criteria while also achieving the highest minimum standards in the industry."
