Depends on what it is. If its the standard low melting point stuff, then a sharp knife (or a hot knife if you are loaded) will do. If its the higher melting point stuff, (like Bee-line or Ocean Polyester etc, then cut with a sharp knife and use liquid rubber if you can get hold of it, tape, or as someone suggested on a previous thread, Superglue. (Although I just tape mine)

Wrap where you want to cut in tape and cut through the middle of the tape wrap and the rope with a hot knife Leaves pre-taped ends and spreads less). Hot knife is a knife held in a flame or go to a climbing shop and ask them to do it with an electric one.

I usually rap some tape round where I'm going to cut it, the cut in the middle of the tape, then melt the cut ends with a fag lighter, spit on fingers and smooth melted bits for a nice finish.

Same as kev and skyjack. Wrap in 3-4 layers of tape. Cut with sharp scissors then heat on hob and seal the core ends. Works good enough for me. Then I tape the tails to the cord so it stops them getting in the way
