To be honest, this subject keeps coming up and it fascinates me.

I was a late starter to climbing, and was over 17 stone at 33 years old, but never once have I found being heavy a reason for not climbing!

See your size (and potential strength) as a bonus, there are many who can tip reduce an oak easier than me without snapping too many twigs, but not many who can dismantle a stem with a 660 and 3 foot bar as well as me.

If you want to do it badly enough, while you are in the tree you will either disregard your size alltogether, or simply adapt your own style to suit.

Dont worry about it, it sounds like you have the bonus of youth on your side too.

Pete.

Judging by the number of xl and xxl shirts requested recently on another thread (you all know who you are :001_tongue:) I'd say there's a fair portion of bigger guys on this site. As long as you're not FAT fat you should be just fine. Technique counts for heaps and 18 stoner is right; just because you might not be a twinkle toes out on those scrawny little twigs when it comes to throwing around big chunks of wood or a 66 up the tree the advantage is yours. Cardio fitness is a must though rather than gym work. I found gym work slowed me up a fair bit because you concentrate too much on a lot of muscle groups you don't actually use. Personally I reckon something like yoga or pilates (which I do) is way more beneficial even if it's only for the stretching and prevention of injury.

12 hour shifts dragging brash and doing pull ups and dips will take it out you thats for sure, experienced climbers dont work a tenth as hard as newbies.

Get used to being thirsty and holding in the need to go to the bog!!!!

Geoff you know how i like to dress things up:biggrin:

ps i am 6 foot and 12 stone and believe i am carrying 1 stone more than most full time climbers my size.

:lol: is that because your an experienced climber:001_tt2:

I am 5ft 11 and around 13stone I am not the fastest around a tree nor am I much good at getting to the very tips. I realsised this very early on BUT I am very good at take downs and I pride myself on this. when it comes to reductions etc. I send up the guys who are good at it and when there is a large take down i do it.

You will be fine just play to you strengths
