Dont worry about it, if you "NEED" one nothing comes close but if you only "WANT" one you will be in for an expensive shock :)

I get the impression that the older vehicles don't cost so much to run and maintain. When things go wrong they're not cheap, but there is less to go wrong on the old round cab machines.

I'm kicking myself about that £3k U900 on ebay. Would have bought it if I wasn't off on holiday and had no time to deal with it. It was bought unseen by Atkinson Vos, who will probably double their money on it without even touching it!

I think its more to do with the newer square cabs being far more powerful, so tend to be worked much harder, so things ware or break more often.

But while they do cost more to maintain, they generate more income, so are a better investment, IME.

I agree 100%. If you can provide it with daily work then the bigger investment would most certainly be the way to go. With that work comes an increased income (well it should) and part of that should cover running costs.

For me, well I only do small clearance work. I pass on all my serious arb work to a friend who knows what he is doing! I just like mogs and for my business I just couldn't justify the upkeep of a newer machine. For me a round cab offers a much improved off road and load carrying ability to a 4x4 pickup and towed chipper, whilst not costing too much more to run.

there seems to be a false idea that unimogs cost a fortune to maintain, this just isnt so, anyone with a good working mechanical ability can look after one, yes certain parts are expensive, but you need to remember that this is a proper comercial vehicle, not some glammed up landrover, as long as preventitive work is carried out things tend to last

yes, and have done for several years now, nothing on the mog is beyond a competent mechanic/engineer, the MB service manuals are all you need along with a good dealer(the specialists are not always cheaper!) and acsess to the MB EPC system for your parts (registration is about £12 a year and its a brilliant piece of kit)
