You could look at motorbike intercoms, every so often lidl/aldi do a basic rider to pillion one (so doesn't use radiowaves) but for a few quid you get a 2 earphones with mics on sticks which you might be able to bodge into some ear defenders and PMR446 radios

The motorola units tend to be a lot lot better than the argos cheapies though :laugh1:

Also have a look on ebay for radio headsets, there's all sorts of things on there that look like you could fit them into ear defenders

my friend has been able to put headphones into his ear defenders.

my idea is to have flat profile earphones.

the lead running down the inside of your t-shirt and the radio on the back of the harness.

the talk button and mic are the bits i'm not sure of.

downsides i can see are saw dust and things catching on the radio.

long wire coming out of tshirt catching on things

and the problem of microphone and talk button.

I now have Motorola 446xtr's with the throat mics and covert earpieces, ptt on the lapel, carried in a chest rig. Its all very secure, and out of the way. Clarity is excellent, the covert earpieces are squishy enough not to be uncomfortable beneath defenders. I found the boom mikes a pita, catching on twigs etc, I tried a chest mic, but that kept unclipping and dangling at the worst times.

PS the boom mics I tried were not the same as the Stein ones, and I was working in dense bramble/undergrowth

PPS Clarity and quality is important in this job, cheap 2-ways do not offer this, and experimenting to find suitable alternatives can prove as dear as just going out and buying a good set-up from a reputable supplier

With all the threads on expensive cb's inbuilt in stein helmets, I wondered if anyone has mackled up a 2 way radio system into their helmet. Eg like one from Argos and was it any good and how much did it cost, because I want to do it. Thanks guys and girls

Hardly fair chap, already wacking the Stein inbuilt com system as over priced. You might want to compare it to the other systems currently on the market for twice the price! Any configured system needs testing marketing and retail support all these things cost money. You want to walk in to your local store to buy arb related stuff but dont want the poor guys supplying you to earn a living, mmmmm :001_huh:

The STEIn systems will be multi way radio systems operational to the entire team over the working distance of the radios they are connected too. You can have as many sets on site as you need with everyone able to communicate without shouting accross a noisy site. Ideal for stop go's on roads or communication during crane or manual take downs. I have used the STEIN prototypes on site during a rigging operation recently and they worked brilliantly we even managed to jointly convince the boss to buy lunch over them. winner
