He fired all sorts of guns in the middle of the last century, 50s and 60s, growing up under the RAF and at OTC, so he has some prior experience, but not much since then.

 

Thanks for any suggestions. 

If he can hit a rat and kill it with an air pistol he needs to be in the Olympic team . Be better off with a " garden gun "  .

Fair enough, thanks for the advice chaps. I might just get them a pair of cats again instead, the rodent problem has been on the rise since their last brother and sister cats died a few years ago.

 

Maybe a little crossbow? Shuriken? Throwing axe?

You need something with a spread pattern . I don't supposed he would have time or able to hold still to aim with anything single shot . If he can manage a .410 that will do it or as I said a small garden gun .

Keeping in mind a lack of certification for the individual concerned, and given his current health, not many years left to obtain and enjoy one... 

 

I'd say cats are probably the way forward, or maybe even ferrets!

A garden gun is a 9mm shotgun. You need a cert, they’re silly long and only about as powerful as a Thai massage.
 

Pre charged pneumatic air rifles are lovely, lovely things. Lightly armour the danger area, peanut butter for bait and choose which ear you want to put the pellet in. Plus plink at little spinning targets, things that go ding etc.

I wouldn't be opposed to suggesting an air rifle as opposed to an air pistol, as I'd inevitably be inheriting it at some point in the future and I imagine I'd get a lot more use out of it, rather than a pistol. I had great fun plinking with my grandad's air rifle when I was single digits, and I wouldn't mind owning one again.

Yeah, they've got a few of those all right, and I got them a Goodnature 24, which I'm a big fan of. But I'm just looking at other avenues as well. Cheers though!

They are small bore shot guns with brass cartridges . Usually 9mm but can be .410 or .360 or .22 . Its the spread he would need . If you think he could manage a pre charged air rifle , sitting at a bench with a bipod then I can recommend the Daystate Huntsman Revere . ( I have one ) . They can be sub 12flb or FAC rated .
