if its the only way to bring this country back into the black then go for it. Labour always bankrupt the country spending money that wasnt there. the Comservatives love em or hate them pick up the pieces and get the country back on its feet are hated for it. if Labour, who got us into this mess helped instead of gripeing all the time then we might, just might get things sorted quicker.

Nail on the head!!!

I do not remember anyone griping about how awkward it was, or moaning about the unfairness of itall when VAT was reduced, I can remember many saying how it would hurt when the reduction was reversed and increased to rectify the blunder. As a country, we can not afford to keep printing our way out of trouble, we need positive methods to sort these issues, many of these methods will hurt our pockets, but I do think we will benefit in the end......... hopefully

speak for your self Andy , i personally was not impressed in the VAT reduction as it was obvious that the only people that were going to suffer in the long run were the small/medium businesses like myself and many others on here . it is proven that the country is in a far worse state now than when the previous goverment brought the vat reduction into play . i guarante you the vat increase will stick arround far longer than the vat reduction did !!!!

well of course it is!! the previous goverments poor management will have a knock on effect for years. so the present goverment inherits their mess and get the blame?? not a job id want to take on!

or.......

its an increase to compensate for the reduction that labour never should have introduced in the first place

Yeh, that too.

The selfishness I was referring to is with regard to all the VAT companies having extra work imposed on them without so much as a thought. Regardless of the "who did what" part that led to the state of the country, it does need sorting, but wouldnt it be something if even in such as Justins case the extra admin and bookwork could be paid for in some way.

We mustn't forget that many of the current hikes were in fact a legacy of the last government, ie fuel duty increases, the VAT increase is a necessary bitter pill to swallow. If we dont have the Vat increase, what other cuts in public spending would you prefer, pay for medical treatment perhaps?

If the increase does turn the corner for the country, we cannot argue against it, after all like Dean says, 2.5% is hardly going to stop many people buying what they would have at 17.5%.

As Im not registered, the biggest impact to my business is going to be fuel costs. Probably my greatest outlay following labour(that doesnt have vat), but even at a guess using £10k of fuel a year is only going to be an increase of £250. If thats my donation to the government to return back to happy days, Im glad to pay it.

Somehow, I doubt the VAT increase alone will cure the problem.
