Thanks all Might get them to put up bird boxes in another area but am running out of jute tree tie webbing to hang them up with. Anyone got any ideas what else I can use that wont choke the trees? I want to avoid nail use but have been given lots of aluminium nails to use and want to arrive with a better alternative so I can dissuade the client from wounding lots of trees if we can avoid it.

Hi All Just doing my risk assessment and have a small quandry Myself and my students will be working (tree planting) in a small woodland tomorrow where TSs wll be on site dismantling trees. Is the safe working distance still 2 tree lengths when stuff is being roped and dropped down? Am thinking we may not be able to go to the wood if so as nowhere is that far away so the wood is too small. Client thought it a good idea to book us both on the same day! Trees are all tall overcrowded sycamore Thanks is advance

yes the largest one was 4 inches + (female inches that is ;-) )

I shall go and re-investigate then and take my mallet! Tree has grown round a barbed wire fence and has other trees growing through it but is close to a lightly (barely) used footpath so will inform landowner it may require investigation One thing though, I didn't see any obvious evidence of rings on the stem?

I took this shot as well (further fungus lower down) 1st fruitbodies were at about 1.5m

It might be possible that it is also/instead growing on the hawthorn stem growing out of the bottom of the oak (shown left of the bracket) .

Im not sure if either case has actually been concluded and wonder of the wisdom of discussing it on a public forum until both are completely resolved Certainly does throw up some points for general discussion though as to duty of care and liability to the public (children, those invited onto your land and not forgetting the duty of care to trespassers too) Surely the act of carrying out tree inspections shows that a duty of care must exist and that CROW doesnt absolve liability in these cases? Will be interesting to see how a "natural feature" is defined

I had always heard that burning softwood would cause the tars/creosote to condense in the chimney and cause possible chimney fires I have an unlined cob (mud, straw and animal dung mix) chimney and my stove ( villager C) draws well even when shut right down (cant keep it in over night as cant shut it down enough) - so are you guys saying softwood (well dried) is absolutely fine? I burn hardwood logs and softwood eco log pellet things at present (pellets are very dry)

Thanks MD - I have Strouts and Winters (forgot I had that one actually) Will look into the other 2 Found some curly brown/black leaves on some roadside Ash yesterday and was wondering what was up with them...will get me Strouts and Winters out (hope thats not rhyming slang!) and have a look!
