I find that the paper type masks don't work too well and end up round your neck anyway. go for a twin filter four point respirator type mask, not comfortable but if you have to work on them seems to be the only ones that really do the job

Only ever used the paper ones they work to a point, the double filter ones are good,I have used them for knocking plaster off walls in my house and they do filter the dust out well, never used them to climb in before.

neoprene type mask used by the bicycle couriers. i got a tiger print purple one once from halfords. you could also change the filter in them.

Plus you can get some with a kind of half skeleton face print that make you look totally rock and roll. Go well with tattoos and misfits t-shirts. Haha.

Had to do a report for the local council down here not so long ago after an Auckland landscape architect recommended planting 140 of the things around a new housing area. I recommended strongly against planting them due to the dust, allergic reactions etc but they went with the landscape architect anyway. Hopefully I'll be out of the game byt the time it comes to start trimming them. Even with a mask on the hairs still get in your eyes so I try and steer clear of them now.
