Yes, others have noticed that the grease used is quite heavy and its there to protect them while in storage prior to sale. There is not much to sort out, just squirt them and carry on using them.

I'm yet to find another manufacturer with the finess and build quality of DMM. The only thing to be said against them for tree work is that the tollerances are so small that minimal dirt could cause issues, I've found this is easily fixed with regular maintanance though and will continue buying their products.

 

I'd deffinitely phone them up though if you cant get them to work as they've always been a good friendly firm to deal with for me.

I have found that ALL makes jam up like this if not kept clean. I don t like graphite powder as the is an abrasion issue. I have used WD with success but I really like silicon spray, it flushes and coats the mechanism without attracting sh**e.

All my carabiners for tree work and a fair few in my rock climbing rack are DMM ones and I've never had issues with them. They make a perfect snapping noise when they close aswell, I've found some other brands have an inferior snapping noise.

Some people have commented to me about the plastic springs being weak, but I've never had one snap...

The LOLER examinations include an offset test that most Karibiner companies agree can in itself damage a karibiner especially if carried out a little too vigourously.

 

LOLER has been brought in to ensure everyone in the industry is looking after their equipment and if it reduced accidents it should prevent insurance costs soaring in line with accidents.

 

Many of us are perfectly capable of carrying out inspections on our own equipment but many unfortunately are not through misunderstanding the kit we use or its safety tollerances wish I had a pound for every climber who has said its only a couple of nicks in the rope mmmmm .

 

I have seen brand new Karibiners from several manufacturers fail testing just through being "stored" in the bottom of a dusty dirty kit bag nothing wrong with the karibiners that a good clean wouldn't sort out but thats no good when you need to use it in the field.

 

For the uninitiated or new folk on here try storing karibiners in a clean bag and pop something to clean them with in the truck just in case, be that GT, WD or Graphite. I would like ot see more retailers offering a sonic cleaner service in the shop got to be worth 50p a pop.
