Not Bear Grylls but I have -

Spent a year living in a rainforest 20miles away from the nearest paved road.

Spent a week alone in the jungle radio tracking cats sleeping in a hammock.

Been in 2 hurricanes and a major earthquake.

Hitch hiked accross Panama at 19 as I spent all my money partying and woke up broke on an Island.

Had Dengue Fever in Colombia.

Been caught up in civil unrest in Indonesia and had to fight to get on an evacuation flight.

Driven from Sydney to Perth in a banger sleeping rough the whole way.

Drove 16 hours through a rebel controlled area in West Africa in a car with no brakes, clutch or lights.

Had a night out in Plymouth

The comparison of ray mears and Bear Grylls is quite funny to.Both are exploiting the public's yearning for this 'back to nature' thing.Don't get me wrong I like them and respect them but is it for real ?

Ray Mears is concerned about the loss of knowledge...the kind of knowledge that enabled us to survive off the land for thousands of years. To say he is exploiting an apparent public yearning to get 'back to nature' is very shortsighted. From what I've seen and heard of him his approach is thoughtful and measured.

Bear Grylls is an idiot.

How about Guy Grieve ( call of the wild ) who actually spent a year out in Canada surviving and nearly dieing

surely you mean Alaska? :001_tt2::biggrin:

For those tha haven't read the book, I'd really recommend it - I read it the first time earlier this year and it really inspired me (couldn't put it down) - it's not just his time out there but the build up to it and at the time I could really relate to his thinking.

Am part way through reading it the second time now :thumbup1:

Fair comment until the remark about Bear ? . Ray is more of a one trick pony survive off the land anywhere at anytime . Mind you he does still train SF around the world . Bear although was in 21 SAS which is actually TA has made good of his training and is more robust and multifunctional than big Ray . Both deserve mutual respect .:thumbup:

I like them both, i like the call of the wild, i like being out side having little fires BUT i do that at work and dont feel the need to find the inner me freezing, starving in the rain under a sitka shelter :biggrin:

I lived in a shack for 5 years with no heating, thats enough for me, if the hot tub isnt at 40 degrees then i stay infront of the log fire WITH the heating on too.:thumbup:
