How often do you sharpen ?

It is very interesting how different chainsaw users like to keep their chains sharp, some stop little and often preferring to touch up a chain others let the chain go to very small chip size before sharpening.

 

So how do you recognise the chains performance and the need to sharpen ?

 

Of course application, wood, type of chain, power of saw all taken into account, but are you a prevention is better than cure cutter ?

 

 

And No there is no angle from Oregon in this, i just want to expand my knowledge so i may pass good ideas and tips on.

i like a sharp chain, i am a very easily irritated so blunt saws make me mad, and a sharp chain lets me do stuff you cant get away with a blunt one. If i have some big felling to do i like to spend a few hours going over the saws in the work shop, strip them down, clean them out, file the bars and give the chains a proper seeing to with a box of new files.

When ever it needs it, blunt saws are awful!!

 

Sharpening takes minuets, so I do mine often.

 

My top tip would be to change your file often, as a sharp file make such a difference.

Just finished a'day off' stripping down all my saws and sharpened 18 chains.

 

Ready to rock and roll again.

 

I just have a bucket full of chains and change them as soon as they dull. There's nothing more irritating than having to stop and sharpen , rather get it right using the good old vice and file.

I try and sharpen my chains each night after work, Just a light touch up

or if they are not cutting right then when ever they need it

same here, a chain stays on till its fckd , changing is just lazy & a waste off money:thumbdown:

We have 3 saws all with atleast 3 spare chains. We sharpen them whenever we use them to keep them in top condition. Even if we dont hit any stones we sharpen them. Sounds a waste of time but a sharp chain is better than a semi sharp or blunt one. We had a massive sort out of chains a couple of years ago as our big boss had sharpened them after smacking concrete and big stones. They cutters were long of oneside and short on the other. the assistant threw those as they were not safe to use for felling or snedding.
