how about the manharness or artilleryman's hitch? this was used for hauling field guns into position as it allowed shoulder loops to be created along the length of the rope and allowed the hands to remain free. I think it appears in pretty much any knot book.

Forget the knot, use a portawrap.

While I like the idea of using a portawrap or steel-rescue-8 with a tie-off, I think you may exceed the SWL of the devices with, say, a 2.5 ton Tirfor. Mind you, there are no shock-loads and the MBS/SWL ratio should be 5/1 leaving ample room.

Thanks for all the advice guys.

Morten, thanks for the vid mate, makes a lot of sense (didn't understand how I could use a portawrap till I saw this, thought Peter was winding me up!).

I will try a granny knot/rescue fig 8/bowline/AB/tapered spike/soaked in a bucket of water/combi tool combo next time, and post pics!

I remember using the bowline witha spike in it years ago pulling stuff, if anyone could put a pic up of where to insert the (tapered) spike I would be grateful.

My old boss used to use them old c hooks in the woods and we used to just use a hitch that was more wrapping the rope rather than using a knot if that makes any sense can't explain how to tie itthough sorry. I would love to get hold of some of the old forestry c hooks if anybody knows where to get hold of any
