Regarding face cuts; 20 years ago I was taught to put in a large gob, 1/3 tree dia. Nowadays these college kids are telling me that a gob no larger than 1/4 tree diameter should be used. Yet you guys go for 45% gobs?

I want to get it right, but now I'm just

 

It all depends what your felling in my experience, On species but mostly if your felling a stick or a whole tree. For a stick i would go for 40/50% but a whole tree no more than 25/30% really.

LOL Rob - It felt like hard work!

As soon as I put my saw in I knew it wasn't sharp enough. I had all the builders on site watching, it was leaning back, the wind was gusting, my insurance premium was on my mind and my heart was in my mouth!

I'd taken a lot of weight off the back, but in retrospect I'd put myself under too much pressure.

I agree with rob mate, a warrior would not go into battle with a blunt sword or blunt arrows would he???

 

If my saw us not 100% when I'm felling then it gets a tickle, could of been worst but it come down and safe so that's the main thing,

 

 

Here is one of my hinges from another thread about 45% gob, side leaner so needed maximum holding wood on the hinge for it to fall right

Did this on my cs31 course from esus forestry, fantastic trainer and guy well worth it.

 

This was before I had tidied up was all snedded and left tidy ready to be picked up. Would love to do coppice cutting or plantation felling

90ft Ash, 80in plus dia stem leant over HV power lines by 18m and 0m in the felling direction. Took some pulling, see the results

ok guys and gals here is my effort be kind only been doing this 3 months,

 

dead lime tree about 25" diameter rotten in base hence the high fell

Not bad at all tom 8/10. Pity you had to recut your hinge so it went more the right way :-p
