You cannot legislate into people, pride in their work or safe working practice.

Has making the driving test harder, in any way improved the standard of driving we see from young drivers??? I think not,

No. I'm not sure if you don't get my point at all or if you do get it and are just far cleverer than me. Haha

the driving test has nothing to do with this. The driving test is a natural progression in life, it enables your lifestyle to change and have a broader spectrum of things you can achieve or do or see. If the driving test was incredibly hard then a few people would be put off even trying it, but the vast majority of us would still have a go.

My theory was that if NPTC units were made harder then our industry would become more specialised and there would be more Highly skilled tree workers around. Far more have a go heros wouldn't even try and become "fully qualified tree surgeons" in 3 weeks.

having not long passed cs 38 i think it would be a good idea to have the rescue part as a seperate ticket as there was two guys on my test that couldnt climb fast enough to save any one so i think you should get a basic climbing ticket then have to get at least 6 months climbing under your belt then do the rescue part of the test

Thank you. A very relevant point. Impossible to dictate though. 6 months solid, 5 days a week? 6 months of half a day here and there or what? Shame though.I was on them same lines.

Does any one personal, not hearsay or a friend of mine, know someone who has been rescued or carried out a rescue???????????

Not me. But potentially someone could have an accident and the only guy on the ground had only passed his climbing ticket the week before and had forgotten how to tie a blakes hitch or how to get his legs through the harness properly.

Indeed and if a trucker or any other lone driver has a heart attach or other incapacitating health affecting occurrence at the wheel, no one is there to take charge of the vehicle.

Thats just life, IMV.

ive played the casualty a couple of times and quickly realised i stood no chance!

the system defo needs an overhaul. the problem is the industry is set in its ways. itl take donkeys years before any changes are noticed.

6 months (or any period) isnt great. as a "qualified" arborist ive spent the last 6 months strimming and spraying! and longer just grounding for unqualified idiots who "think" they are tree surgeons. try advising them itl go wrong if that bit is cut first...........standing in the middle of the tree.........no second anchor..........one hand on the climbing rope..........the other hand on the 200t...........

I hear you Frank, but a lot, if not most, 'tree surgeons' (trading totally legally) haven't got any NPTC units at all.

There's the way it should be.

And there's the way it is.

I totally agree with your sentiment generally, but you ain't going to change it, bud.

I'm off to the fridge for a beer.
