H&S Issues Re Making Chainsaw Chains

I have recently been questioned on the H&S implications of making up chains from a reel

We have done this for a long time and never had any issues

It was suggested that we ought to but ready made chains.

Has anyone else had this as a concern

or any thought,s

Well perhaps we can have an NPTC unit for making up chain loops

I guess it all boils down to being competent to carry out the task - then that leads onto who is competent and the stock answer is always "KATE" is a competent person.

Meaning someone with the required Knowledge, Authority, Training and Experience. (or something like that) I'm quite happy if someone wants to correct this if it's the wrong definition.

As you are making up the chains, using the links provided with the links, on a rivet spinner designed for the task, what could possably be the problem?

If in doubt, do yourself a generic risk assessment to make pen pushers feel better:lol:.

after all, do you have a history of the links you have spun snapping?? NO? I thought not. There is no problem then is there!

(is it just me though, or are there never quite enough links in the box:blushing:)

I always make up our chains these days.

Have had the odd one snap back in the days but nothing recently as far as I remember. Although also had a fair share of dealer chains snapping.

Although it is an obvious H&S issue of a flying bit of sharp steel have never had or heard of an injury from a snapped chain.

So to me I would say it is a low risk.
