Similar event happened to an outfit here a few months ago. Chainsaw operator didn't know what he was doing and put his (so called) face cut on the uphill side of the tree opposite the direction of fall. The tree (Willow) split approximately 20 feet up the trunk, speared back and landed on him. Punctured lung, busted shoulder and arm etc. ICU for a few days. Soft ground saved his life as he was squished into it. Pictures of the gob cut attached. I iwsh people would call in the pro's instead of trying to save money or time then we wouldn't have to hear about so many of these untimely deaths.

I always find it sad that these instances occur, no matter what the circumstances. People will always take a risk doing something that they have not had any training or proper preparation and is it the landowners fault? Did they say that they could do it? What training and equipment did they have? Why does "fault" always have to come into the argument - has anyone ever had an "accident".

My thoughts to those left behind.

Sad indeed that someone was killed like that.

I think personally that people dont realise they have a responsibility in who they employee to carry out work, whether its tree work, electrical, roofing, building etc.

I think that most of they time they think that if someone says they can do it they just let them get on with it and think if theres a problem its thier fault and not mine.

If the land owner doesnt know its his responsibility to make sure the employed people have the required training and insurance then imo they cant be held responsible.

I know ignorance isnt an excuse but has anyone ever said to you that if you employee a tree surgeon make sure he has the right certs and insurance because if he hasnt and kills an employee or member of the public the blame can fall on your shoulders.

For all we know the land owner may have thought he was employing a bona fide company.
