the older i get the more interested im getting in yoga, ive never tried it but speak to more and more climbers who are recommending it. does anyone here practise on a regular basis or has tried?

 

Steve, I've been having similar thoughts although mine were spurred on by channel 275 on Sky! Worth a look if you get the right programme!

hi,

 

yeah I do yoga/or sports physio exercise everyday (well nearly) it has helped me no end. I think you have to be very careful what classes you attend, as there are many different styles and good/bad instructors out there. I find I have too many things on to attend a class but do 20-30 minutes in the morning when you are at your worst. It’s worth warming the body up a little and then doing some stretching exercises. For me it was figuring out what worked for me. It does take time and I am still not hundred present but a lot more like it. I feel its good to get some more flexibility over the course of a few months and then start on some strengthening exercises. I thought I had plenty of core strength from years of rock climbing and tree surgery but there are many core muscles that you do not use. A good testament of that is one of the guys I have worked with is in his 50’s and has been doing the job for 20+ years and never had a bad back! He is very methodical in his prewarm up to work and his stretching and strengthening exercises. Best of luck Steve

I've been doing yoga on and off for 5 years now.... In a stage of 'not doing it' at the moment... feel too tired to get out to the classes in the evening :blushing:

 

I'd say it's one of the most beneficial things you can do in your life but watch out as there are a lot of very bad teachers out there... when they start lighting candles and chanting I tend to get a bit spooked!

 

The benefits are good for body and mind but it's having the motivation to practice regularly as results are not instant.

I just started Yoga recently as the transition from climbing every day to a lot of desk work is causing my hips to seize up. I went to an Osteopath last year with a back and knee complaint which comes on when I am running and she recommended lots of stretching.

 

The class I attend is taught by a friend (Home - redkite) and she is really good. It's actually pretty hard work and I feel fairly knackered after a 1 and a quarter hour session.

 

Personally I am not in to the joss sticks and meditation aspect of yoga at all so it was important for me to find the right teacher and the right class.
