I dont think thats a crime. The way I think about it, not all the oil is removed at an oil change, at least a film and probably some puddles are left. Brands must get mixed the whole time surely?

I think its only modern engines that have DPF'S that you need to use the correct oil, in regards to the additives rather the than viscosity.

Lots of oils that are say 10w40 but some are for fords, some bmw etc. Its to do with the api or apeac or something like that rating, A1, A3, B1....

Just bung it in and give us a 10,000 mile update. It will be like a little AT experiment.

Topping up oil - never have the same barrel that the garage uses so I just get a 1l pot from Halfords - the make depends how flush I am feeling from Halfords own up to Castrol or whatever. Most people do the same. If it was a problem we'd know about it I reckon. Above disclaimers apply though, highly engineered machines might need specific oils, run around Passats will take anything for example.

The irony being that run around Passats with the aforementioned PD do call for special oil. A mate has had a couple of the engines in other cars and says it does matter

I've topped up loads of engines with mixed oil or slightly different oils to reccomended ( often pd engines)

Whilst I'm hesitant ro actually reccomend it, it hasn't caused any issues yet

I def wouldn't be worrying about different brand oils
