Stefan here—Arbtalk since 2014, grinding stumps out of Darvel, Scotland. Oil-rig welder turned stump lord, and I’ve got a bone to pick.

Tree surgeons—tree monkeys swinging in your fancy harnesses—why the bloody hell are you lot messing with stump grinders? Machinery’s for the big boys, not you branch-hugging climbers. I’ve tipped my rig, laughed through gas leaks, ground ‘til the sparks flew—years of this shite, and I own it.

You lot? Stick to saws and ropes—leave the grinding to pros who don’t monkey about. Climbed a tree lately? Good—stay up there and stop mucking with my game. Rant over—prove me wrong, you soft sods, or sod off back to the canopy!

Oil rig welders, stick to welding...

The simple answer is stump grinding is easy. Any one that isn't fully married to their sister can do it.

If you can run a tree business, organise complex works etc. Why wouldn't you but a simple machine and earn money from it. It's not difficult.

grinding stumps since you were swinging from mummy’s branch. Easy, you say? Tell that to the gas pipe I hit at 100mm—fumes choking, sparks flying, me laughing like a nutter while you’d have wet your harness. Started arb at 12 in Sweden, our forest, not some posh tree biz with daddy’s cash. Oil-rig welder turned stump king—I’ve tipped rigs and ditched weddings for this ‘simple’ game. Buy your toy grinder, you rope-tugging twit—let’s see you last a day before you’re crying for your saw. Stick to climbing, ya smug sod—I’m the psycho who owns this turf!

Oooh looking forward to seeing what direction this goes in. Nothing like the direct challenge to get fingers clicking on keypads 🤪

ha ha, well it's true in most cases.   stick to the trees and get me a banana while up there

Stefan, welcome back you madman!

Always loved your input.

Joe has made a very good point, but I know where you’re coming from.

There’ stump grinding and there’s stump grinding.

Can anyone link that recent post where the customer refused to pay because his gardener couldn’t replant?

Have you been in the white spirit Stefan.

I can’t help but laugh at Scandinavians who when they find out what I do say they have been cutting trees since they were a boy.

There is a vast difference between cutting trees for a week in summer at grandads cabin and climbing and cutting 5 days a week for 20 plus years.

Stump grinding isn’t that hard, especially these days with remote control grinders and tracked machines that are very capable.

Stump grinding is a shit job, stick to it.  You can have them all as far as I am concerned.

😜

Anyway we all know it is the climber who gets the birds.  Not the guy covered in tree dust and grime operating a deadly machine at ground level.
