Retrenchment is gradually reducing the upper crown in stages to mimic the natural decline of a tree.

The aim is to promote a healthy secondary, lower crown.

I'd say that is almost right -except the mimic bit, as the natural decline of a tree usually involves big heavy limbs that die, then get blown off in a gale, so retrenchment is a managed decline, with a view to improving safety around and under the tree

So djaknow how "staged reductions" aren't really seen as worthwhile any more...

Yes but that would be retrenchment pruning rather than retrenchment , which is a natural process.
