What does Chestnut burn like?

I need some wood to see me through the rest of winter, been offered seasoned chestnut at a good price.  Will be going in a stove so not worried about sparks

 

I'm generally of the view if it's dry it burns, but chestnut apparently isn't great full stop?  Is this true?

 

If so how bad is it?  Is it

A. Avoid at all costs you'll never get a fire from it, don't take it if you're paid to

B. Not great but if it's cheap and going in a stove it's fine

C. Dunno what you're talking about it's a brilliant wood.

Horse chestnut is awful, sweet chestnut is fine. 
 

how many tonnes do you need? I have lots of seasoned ash cord here.

Sweet chestnut is ok in a stove. It’s spits a fair bit and burns quite quickly I’ve found. I usually mix it with other stuff, but happy to burn on its own too.

I find SC gives very little heat.  My missus actually asked me once 'are you burning some of that SC you have?  There's no heat coming from the burner'.  Standard fare for us to burn is 100% softwood; hardwood (mostly) = money as firewood.

I agree with other posters on this thread.  SC is OK, but never my first choice.  The bottom line is it is all about dry weight.  If a firewood is very light it will not give a great amount of heat.  If the chestnut feels heavy then avoid it completely as this means it is still wet. 

 

If it is properly dry and cheap it might be worth it, but don't expect a lovely hot fire....a gentle warm burn is more like it.

SC is a standard firewood here (France) cheaper than oak.

Not at all niche.
