Back on the tongs theme, it is an interesting concept.

Throwlines and ropes simply don’t work on tall skinny conifers like sitka etc. where the sparse skinny lower limbs just snap out with a base tie and you can’t isolate the stem.

I've used a throwline and rope on Sitka a few times.  Throw it through to the other side and then throw it back, tighten up with a running bowline around branches and all until it's properly tight, like breaking the branches tight, and pull it over.  It can work quite well that way, but I agree you're unlikely to get a nice tight rope isolated around the stem.

I'd have similar reservations about using tongs in a tight conifer, there's going to be a lot of branches in the way of getting them properly attached, making sure you can see that they're properly attached and also keeping them properly attached.  The conifer in the video is relatively clean for attaching the tongs (or a rope from a throwline for that matter), and making sure that you've got them properly secure.  I'd also be nervous about using tongs for anything that needed a real pull, alright for a wee bit of light persuasion perhaps, but anything needing a significant chug I don't think I'd trust a pair of tongs.

As always I stand to be corrected if folk have used them with success in the past.

Fair enough mate, that’s a lot of hedge.

How wide are they at 8’, and how are you sending 80’ heads out without trashing the bottoms?

And who’s on the saw at 8’?

Not a nice place to be.

Diameter varies a lot but I will guess at 18-20" on these. I will take some measurements and pics tomorrow.

Pot luck on how trashed they get but they do come right, again I will take some pics of ones that have been done in the past to show what they turn into.

On this occasion it is me on the saw. No, not a nice place to be and I have said all along I am not particularly brave and certainly not a have a go hero.

ps. didn't think you were being a twat and glad of any advice offered on here by you and everyone else. That's mostly why I am here.

The innovative Swiftie 50 mooring aid is also available with an aluminium telescopic pole giving you over 2 metres of reach when...

MIght not work for your application but work well on a hardwood. Put it on some aus poles and your away.

Also works well for climbing lines.

I've pulled some big stuff over with pull lines set from ladders as long as it is over 2.2m and no higher than 2/3 total hight  and the cut is backed up with wedges.

In these situations I just wrap the rope around the base, tie a running bowline, push the rope as high as possible, then apply some pull in the rope until it bites.
Personally, I can’t ever remember doing a base tie for an assisted fell.

This particular hedge was cut off at about 4’ when it was well over 60’ tall, it’s actually in my garden  IMG_6411.thumb.jpeg.2bbe4b31a1f225a3fdbe607d5bd5ec8a.jpeg

This is the one I am working on. The low bit was cut off maybe 10 years ago

. These were cut off about 7 years ago and allowed to grow up again. The wood from these is what I am currently heating my house on
