Winter diesel

To be fair, I think I messed up. Bought diesel end of August as I was out, obviously got summer grade, and it's waxing up when it gets to 0 deg C.

Mainly notice as I always fill up with filter funnels, so you can see it not pouring.

Any good additives that will help, or get another small delivery now, and the storage tank will be mixed up roughly 1/3rd summer diesel & 2/3rd winter grade diesel?

add 10% petrol when you fill in cold

Never, ever add petrol to diesel, as it breaks up the long chain molecules and evaporates.

If I've spilt diesel, hydraulic oil etc on the workshop floor I mop it up and then wipe the floor with a rag soaked in a little petrol it's that corrosive and drys.

Kerosene is all you need if you've enough, whilst the official additive is a mix mostly of heavy non evaporating petrol 70c+.

Interesting, never heard that before, but not arguing with you at all. Was told by many sources petrol was OK, and never had a problem. Is the issue that it can cause other problems beyond perhaps not preventing waxing?

The UK doesn’t really get the kind of cold snaps that would necessitate the use of winter diesel, 99% of the waxing problem is moisture in the fuel. If the holding tanks and the machine tanks/filter bowls are regularly drained of any water you shouldn’t get a problem.Water content is the main reason some machines suffer with waxing and others don’t.

I'm no chemist, but anything that acts as a solvent will breakdown the molecule chain probably also making it more dangerous and able to be set alight.

So yes, it will run in a diesel engine but more flammable from the vapour.

Winterised diesel uses a lower oil fraction that's a higher boiling point.

But the water thing is more of a problem as bio content is more hygroscopic
