I think it also depends on whether they want to be employed , subbie climber with kit, or set up their own company.

As an employed climber you'll have fairly set hours and it'll pretty much a job like any other. 40ish hours weekly and usual holidays etc

If you're good enough, subbie work is probably the best money for least investment and you more or less manage your own hours. Much better day rate but no paid leave and your own insurance.

If the long term plan is to set up a company and employ staff then prepare for lots of long hours, weekends, sleepless nights etc or a decade of crippling debt. Whichever you prefer.

You get all the responsibility and cost, which can be a burden but if you get it right you can make almost as much as an employed climber!

I’d agree with most of that Conor, a good freelance climber is a good bang for buck earner, albeit with a limited shelf life.

Not many will make it into their 40’s, let alone 50’s.

The only insurance you might want to have is personal accident.

Anything else is bollocks.

Bloody hell Connor! She’s a 17 year old girl.

Think you’re looking a bit too far ahead.

There's a stump grinding guy on here who would make those hours look like a part time job.

Personally I prefer to work reasonably quickly for the shortest time possible to get the earliest finish I can. I choose who I work for accordingly.

I noticed that having a woman in the team changes the behaviour of the 'boys' and her presence is appreciated by clients, especially other women.

I would dearly love to have a female apprentice but Alex is a pretty boy so next best thing.

Unpopular opinion: young people should be encouraged to work unpleasantly long hours for shitty employers so they can get a taste of what hard work is. Only after a few years of that are they allowed to even think about a 6-8 hour day.

Maybe I am. Maybe not. just thinking back to when I was about that age, maybe even a bit younger. I kinda had an idea where I wanted to end up and what I liked doing. Had no clue how to join the dots though.

I do like to think all the youth (jaysus, I sound like an ould lad) aren't a complete lost cause. 17 is the perfect time to start planning out your life goals imo.
