The newer style Stihl heads are very poor compared to the previous model.

if using commercially then 3 in 5 years is about right unfortunately. I now run them till just out of warranty, sell whilst they are still in working order and will make a decent price. Put that towards a new one.

rinse and repeat

Yup, a model number and pics can save a hundred words!! If it is just the rods, that is OK but if the gears are shot, that is another story.

I have rebuilt many of these heads, the last one had been at another outfit for a year and they couldn't remove the input bearings🤔

Am I to bother trying to fix or shoukd injust go ahead and order a new blade head. This happened before...dealer said needed replacing as gearbox shattered. I'm greasing it and taking what I have thought to be proper care. This is my third blade head in 5 years.

5 yrs!!!?????

I am lucky if my hedge trimmers last 5 months!

Love the HLA long reach ones but they dont last a season with my guys. Will go through 4 per summer easy.

Just die for no apparent reason.

Incidentally i just had one die a couple of weeks ago and when i opened it up the bearings were half gone (dont know where as didnt look to hard).

Are the bearings you seeing metal balls or the cylindar type pins? I've been using the HL94s for around 9 years and gone through only one head unit. Last time my HL94 angle head broke, I took the front cover off, the cylinder pins had fallen out, but there were ball bearings also mixed in with the grease. The heads have a Drive Pinion inside which eventually go and the balls fall out. I just bought a whole new head for around £250. I don't see it worth repairing it if you have had 4 years or so out of it. The key is to keep the head packed with grease and shapen the blades regularly. I regrease every 15/20 hours. You will **************** them up if they are being run dry.

May have sorted it actually. I found a spare head in the shed. Done a swap of a part (I have non idea what it's called) and seems to be cutting ok. Today will be the measure. I'll upload photos etc if need more assistance. Thanks for those offering helpful comments 👍
