Geotropic fungi

Once the orientation of the host tree changed, geotropism caused adaptation of the FFB as David said. 
 
It would be nice if FFBs changed a few years before stem/root failure. We'd be able to predict how safe trees were, without resistographs and the Picus, just by looking at the orientation[emoji3]

I think you've misunderstood what I was saying.

It's cool how things know which way is up.  In much the same way that cambium cells 'know' which kind of wood to create depending on their orientation.

Not geotropism, or is it? The older bracket looks to have been broken away but the new growth appears to be trying to save it (it interested me anyway)

I'm going to ask what might be a daft question, but all these fungi appear to be in the daylight so how do we know it's geotropism and not phototropism?

Fungi are closer to us than plants in that they need to 'eat' things to survive and they're not subject to an energy requirement that is fulfilled by sunlight and photosynthesis, so it's unlikely that they'd be aligning themselves with the sun.
