Most productive pto log splitter under 4k

Evening all.

I’ve got an Oxdale splitter that has served me faithfully for the last ten years, but I think I might have welded it up for the last time.

i can fill an IBC with split logs in 40 mins if I’m going for it, but consistently my labourer manages 6 in a working day.

what’s out there that’s faster?

the Eastonmades and Fuelwood Splittas of the world look amazing, but my budget doesn’t stretch that far.

can anyone recommend anything other than a new Oxdale?

I like my Hand engineering horizontal splitter.

 

40 minutes is about average even for me, not pushing myself and just plodding through.

 

I thought oxdale looked a bit meh, I have a petrol venom one. Stick to something upto 13ton and the cycle time won't bore you to tears.

It sounds to me that your Oxdale is doing OK tbh. It's one thing to do an IBC in 40 minutes but how long would it take you to do 6?

It isn't just about splitting the logs, you have to deal with the split logs and ensure the unsplit log supply is there too.

TBH anything beyond an Oxdale very nearly becomes a 2 man job to be efficient.

Having said that I think a Posch HydroCombi might suit you but you need the table that goes under the blade (not the cutting billets setup) though I don't suppose they are much different than a Venom. Haven't used a Venom so can't comment.

Eastonmade 12-22 cuts wood very quick but you still have to deal with the logs, and the mountain of waste!

Where did you get it if you don't mind me asking.

I found it on eBay about 5 years ago nearby, even then it was about 10 years old, they do sell direct to the end user.

 

It's done about 1000+ Ibc cages and counting so far, it isn't fancy but at a reasonable working height allowing you to split and keep an eye on sizing.

 

Don't think I could do vertical unless it was one of those table types you see on ebay like proforge.

I've not used one but seems to me a conveyor for the outfeed is the rolls royce option, so you aren't really handling the split logs just slide off the table.

The reason I ask is because you rarely see or hear of them. I had one that I did buy direct from them some years ago but I sold it on eBay about 5 years ago. Sounds like it could be the same one.

It was a good splitter and I picked that one out especially as the ram pushed the log through the blade. Makes so much more sense to me, especially if you have an elevator that moves the logs off to an IBC, trailer or whatever.

Over the years I have had an Oxdale, a Hand, a Posch Hyrdrocombi and an Eastonmade 12-22.

I regret selling the Oxdale most. The Posch is a better splitter than the Oxdale but I can't get on with the one hand operation and haven't figured out a workaround. I know why they are there but they do slow you down and can make it more dangerous at times. The 12-22 latches on the split stroke and the return stroke, it doesn't take a lot of imagination to see how that can go wrong. It makes me cringe when I see people leaning across them to deal with split logs.

It was from an old guy who seemed to run a fruit farm over on the outskirts of Northwich and was running it backwards on tractor hydraulics.

 

It's about the right height to split almost into the IBC, after I raised the legs, replaced the valve block and made it one handle for purely controlled safety, i don't even use the auto return to improve speed.

 

Posch and Eastonmade aren't really for processing arbwaste, partly why I suggested proforge instead of a shed built option.

 

I'm not sure about the table splitters bending, but I'm not splitting on the floor and found even the venom too slow and physically too low in either vertical or horizontal.

 

If you like the posch, just rip the valve block off and fit a new valve block.

I run a oxdale with a home brew power pack can split and fill potato box in 45 minutes. It also sits on a table at the right hieght. All mounted on skids so I can pick it up and move as one piece..

You can get a foot pedal kit for the Posch or could imported … I would not let any employer use it with one installed though. Very easy to end up minus a digit.
