I agree with you that upgrading to a modern PCP makes a huge difference in performance, especially with range and accuracy. I’ve been eyeing the Gamo rifles too, they seem to give solid performance for the price, though I’ve always had a soft spot for the BSA models (I believe they’re made under license too).

Both bsa and gamo springers have some of the worst triggers imaginable. BSA are owned by Gamo now.

Go for a Weirach instead.

I bought an FX DRS .22 in walnut a week or two back. Put a Donny silencer on it and it is very quiet.
PCP and filled with a dive bottle. Does 2p size groups at 30metres.
I’ve put about 500 pellets through it already and absolutely love it.
Only shot at targets so far but will be used on live quarry. IMG_6250.thumb.jpeg.890e6fc6b3c5074827ee6b33c597be7d.jpeg

Gammo are absolutely awful, as are most budget buys including Webley as the triggers have zero feedback and I wouldn't even let a child use some of them I've seen in the shops.

Stick to the name brands or older used models if you can find one.

To kill a squirrel from a cage trap without a gun place a Hessian sack over the door end, open the door within the sack (sounds tricky but it's ok) and the animal will usually head for the dark "safe" space in the sack. Then carefully remove the sack, sealing the opening, the squirrel will go for the corners where you can pinion it with your foot and give it the required whack. All very controlled, minimal stress all round. Works for rats too. Young mink really didn't want to go in the sack but did eventually. Adult mink need bigger traps and shooting not whacking.
