Can’t imagine many as it was flattened in the war.. I went there once but only stayed for the evening at a camp site as we were travelling through… lots of big black poplars is all I can remember.

my trip was somewhat shortened, partly due to some peeps stealing some of the railway line on the frankfurt side; anyway it was dark the entire time i was there, i saw a few street plane trees doing their thing, that's it, didn't bother taking any photos :(

I visited Cologne (and frankfurt) way back in late 1980s. Noticed most street trees with any sort of defect filled with cement/concrete, and held together with massive galvanised through bolts. If they're still there I'd guess its because they're practically fossilised and no-one would want to put a saw anywhere near the poor things

There are loads of big old trees in Cologne. In Germany they have a classification of tree that translates as something like ‘nature monument’, like veterans basically. In Cologne the city takes on the management of all these trees, whether they’re on private or public land. I worked in that contract for a company and we were going at it for months.

Cemeteries in particular seem too have a load of trees round there. The red oaks, plane trees and poplars I worked on around Cologne were all on a scale I’ve not seen elsewhere. Some real monsters, great fun.

So yeah, loads of interesting trees…
