Right to charge extra ?

We priced for a Silver Birch removal 10 months ago . Today we finally got to do the job . On arrival all was well until I saw that the rear garden had been completely landscaped . Now instead of a large lawned area there was gravel raised flower beds and ornate metal frames for climbing plants to grow on ?. Not to mention the little pond and a chicken run at the bottom of the garden. This was the reason for the customer taking so long to give the go ahead .Anyway I explained that the job would take a lot longer as when we priced it all the rear garden was lawn no targets plenty of access . Got all brash off today chipped removed and some timber . Have to go back tomorrow to chog down the timber in small discs .I thought an extra £ 100would be a fair amount considering extra time on site . Hes moaning . I know I should of given a new price before we started. The goon tryed to give me a twenty quid note :sneaky2: I dont think so . See what happens tomorrow . Bang goes the no work on Saturday rule :lol:

As a % how much extra is the £100 you want & his offer of £20?

 

How many extra man hours did it take?

 

Explain to him that the number of extra hours even at min wage would be more than the £20 he is offering.

You know the answer mate, you slipped up. Take the £20, say thank you and learn from it, look at it from the other guys point of view, he knows nothing of cutting down trees, and you probably said it all very jovially thinking the guy will know £100 is fair. Mental negotiation is not between 2 folk, just yourself. We live and learn mate.:laugh1:

well why not try asking him for another of those crisp looking notes ?? that should cover it mate:sneaky2::001_tongue:

Sadly if you have given one customer a price for the job however long ago ,unless you have re agreed a new price after looking at all the new obstacles that you will have to deal with, then the first agreed price is the price they should pay . If you try to charge more without advising them first before you start on it then you are at a risk of making them really unhappy and refusing to pay the extra and also they may not put in good words for you when others ask them what company did your trees for you .

 

If it were me in your situation and I new I had messed up the pricing I would just do the job really well with a smile for the first agreed price and say nothing . One Happy customer is 5 more one Unhappy customer is 10 less

Spot on! A quote is a quote in my book! If you have dropped a clanger and got it wrong thats your fault not the client. If the situation has changed you should have re negotiated before the start of the job.

 

Take it on the chin! as littletree says One Happy customer is 5 more one Unhappy customer is 10 less.
