If you're gaffing out with sharp spikes of whatever length the problem is your technique. You'll be too close to the stem and spiking in at too shallow and angle. You don't need to stamp the spikes in. 

 

Try letting your side strop out and leaning back a bit instead of hugging the tree.

best thing is to buy 'kiwi klimber spacers'. they are just a piece of aluminium that slots between the gaff and the shank which gives you some more room without having to use the long gaffs. they fit the distels fine

The euro gaffs place you even further from the stem and make it very difficult to use your heel or toe to brace yourself. I will see if I still have mine in the shed from years ago- you can have them if I do as I hated them with a passion. I have climbed on longs for years now and it was worth the little extra time getting used to them.

Do you find that they run better when they're just a touch blunt?

 

Out the box i was sinking a bit too far into poplar etc. Less of an issue now
