I was on tree of heaven from the first photo. I think they're opposite, just a bit off, rather than full half way between alternating.

Looks a bit Caucasian Wingnut , possibly .....

Local authority shows it as poplar but looks more like Tree of Heaven.

Shall keep looking.

Clearly having arse/elbow trouble if they think that's a poplar.

I'd have guessed at manna ash but the leaves should be opposite pairs so maybe not. 

 

Buds are quite distinctive but brown rather than the darker blackish colour of common ash.
